Are you over 60 years old? Do you want to explore your sensuality and body through burlesque, drag and improvisation in a safe and relaxed atmosphere?
Drag artist Theodora Rex aka Jaana Pirskanen is facilitating Sensuous Workshop in London. Come and build your own sensual character: perhaps delicate and romantic, maybe funny or erotic, or grotesque and flamboyant?
Photographer Vilma Rimpelä will shoot videos and portraits of those who want their characters portrayed.

SENSUOUS – AGING AND SEXUALITY
Discussing aging and sexuality is often considered a taboo. Sensuous celebrates sexuality and beauty of people who are over sixty years old. It is a collaborative art project that combines exploration of movement, drag, burlesque, video art and photography. Sensuous is about body and sex positivity and showing older people as desiring and desirable. People who join Sensuous come from different backgrounds and participation does not require previous experience in dance or theatre. The workshop is free from admission because we want to keep it open for everyone regardless of socioeconomic background.
The first workshops will be held at the end of October 2018 in Helsinki, and the next workshops in November 2018 in London. The Finnish Institute in London is funding the project in Britain. The videos and photographs will be exhibited both in London and Helsinki in 2019. The participants can also perform their burlesque / drag acts at the exhibition openings and on a club stage if they wish. The Posh Club Hackney has promised to offer possibilities to perform on their stage. However, participating in the workshops does not require performing.
Burlesque and drag offer fabulous ways to explore delicate and intimate aspects of human existence. Theatricality and humour bring multiple layers of meaning to the Sensuous work process. Sensuous beings want to feel, be seen and be heard as sexual beings. The Sensuous project encourages us to see sexuality as a part of one’s whole life.

THE PEOPLE RUNNING THE PROJECT
The founder of the Sensuous project, Jaana Pirskanen, has studied dance, psychology and philosophy. They have also done doctoral studies on queer theory and feminist philosophy. As an artist, Pirskanen is passionately fascinated about gender and sexuality, and exploring different gendered ways to exist. For more than 15 years, they have explored beauty and gender norms, as well as plurality of gender and sexuality, using video art, burlesque and drag. Pirskanen is also working as a psychologist and as a co-ordinator for Seta, the LGBTIQA+ organisation in Finland.
Vilma Rimpelä is a photographer and a video producer from Tampere, who is currently preparing a documentary about the underground drag culture in Finland. Rimpelä finds drag fascinating because of it’s strong potential for expression, therapeutic effects both for the performers and the audience, and the stories behind drag characters. Rimpelä’s customers include Sony Finland, Red Cross Finland, Helsingin Sanomat and The Finnish National Broadcasting Company Yle.
The producer of the project, Marleena Haapaniemi, has ten years of experience in producing contemporary dance and art education. For the past two years, she has worked as a freelancer in several concert and TV productions. Haapaniemi is interested in projects which bring new topics to current social discussions.
