It’s difficult to find the bright side of a long-term disabling illness. And whenever I’m poised to express positivity, I baulk because I’m afraid the response will be, ‘You’re SO brave!’ with the subtext, ‘Thank God you’re being brave because I don’t want to be around if you’re needy, crying and desperate.’ This is just my fear, of course – I don’t have any evidence that people don’t want to help me, in fact, quite the reverse. But it’s interesting how my mind conjures up fears of abandonment and neglect now that I have limited mobility and energy.
